Between Light
A sculpture about light, silence, and presence.
A Memory of Candlelight.
As a child, I watched my mother shape fragile ceramic sculptures often resembling broken eggshells, each one holding a small candle light. In my hometown, her works became quietly iconic. Light lived inside something cracked and unfinished — yet alive.
This sculpture continues that lineage, not as a replica, but as an echo. The candlelight that filled our home became a symbol of calm, warmth, and quiet harmony.
The sculpture Between Light balances on its toes, leaning forward, arms extended — offering light. The body is tense yet gentle, caught between effort and grace. Each hand holds a candle, and the flame becomes part of the gesture: an extension of attention, care, and presence.
The light does not simply illuminate the sculpture—it completes it. The work asks for your participation: to light the candle, to pause, to stay. As the flame burns, shadows move slowly across the body. Through this shifting light, time becomes visible and space is gently transformed. The bronze changes with the moment, and the figure feels momentarily alive.
Candles shape a space. They soften the room, slow time, and invite stillness. In this
work, the solidified body holds the moment and invites you to take part.
Between Light was sculpted in clay in my studio in Beijing. The work emerged during a period of cold but bright December days, where the fragile balance between light, silence, and presence became part of the process.
