Breath #2

Breath #2 rises as a figure, but refuses to fully assemble. The legs remain grounded, while the body lifts and separates into suspended forms—like breath held, released, and held again. What should connect instead hovers, creating space where the body would normally be whole.

The sculpture feels less like a fixed figure and more like a rhythm made visible. Each segment becomes a pause, an interval—like the quiet moment between inhale and exhale. The absence is not emptiness, but structure. It allows the form to extend beyond itself.

What makes this piece especially distinct is its origin in two materials. The upper forms were first shaped in wood, the lower in clay—two different ways of thinking through the body, brought into a single vertical line. This duality echoes in the final work, where the figure feels both constructed and dissolving at once.

For Johannes Nielsen, the addition of patina becomes more than a surface choice. It softens the transitions, unifying the fragments while still allowing their differences to remain. The color settles into the sculpture like breath itself—subtle, shifting, and alive.

In Breath #2, the body becomes a measure of something unseen. Not a solid form, but a living rhythm—stretching upward, loosening, and quietly gathering again.
